Pumpkins are fondly associated with Halloween because of the pumpkin jack 0-latern brought over to America during the Irish Potato Famine in 1800s. Traditionally the lantern was made from a potato or beet with a burning candle inside, representing the departure of loved ones. These lanterns were placed in windows and by the front door to welcome the dead yet also serving as protection against evil spirits. As potatoes and beets were not readily available in America the pumpkin was used as a replacement and has since become a traditional vegetable to have by our front door every 31st October.
