It’s not a difficult task to think of the scariest films you have ever watched, the hardest part of it is trying not to scare yourself all over again! At the birth of the horror movie genre we were subjected to watching Hammer films, which for the time was extremely scary. Then scripts started to follow political subjects, for example Invasion of the Body Snatchers was based upon the fear in American society of communism. Since then gore became the main focus of horror films, and the gorier it got the better it was in the eyes of many horror fans.
Recently it seems many studios and scriptwriters are running out of steam for new horror stories and so we have been seeing remakes or sequels to classics that we enjoyed decades ago. Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Dawn of the Dead have all had a modern take on them, with some even becoming 3D.
We at AllFancyDress thought we would share our Top 10 scariest films along with some inspirational costumes that will make you look as spine chillingly scary as the original characters:
10. Hellraiser – If you think being Pinhead is the right character for you to scare everyone at the party with then this costume is for you!
9. Halloween – No one would want Michael Meyers as their brother, he is one of the scariest men to have come to our screens. No matter what you do, you just can’t kill him!
8. Poltergeist – Become a house-dwelling spirit and terrify everyone in it! A party is a great time for a little haunting!
7. The Evil Dead – Whatever you do this Halloween don’t travel to a friend’s cabin in the woods, you may release flesh eating demons!
6. A nightmare on Elm Street – Will Freddy be coming for you? No one at the party will be sleeping after Halloween, just in case you come to disturb their slumber!
5. Friday the 13th – Did you know a young boy drowned the year before those two others were killed? The counsellors weren't paying any attention... They were making love while that young boy drowned. His name was Jason.
4. The Silence of the Lambs – A psychological thriller always has us on the edges of our seat, so why don’t you try this Hannibal Lecter costume and get in the mind of Clarice.
3. Dawn of the Dead – Whether a fan of the original or the modern version or even both there is a zombie costume just for you!
2. Saw – What is scarier in this film the Hostage taking pig or the ventriloquist doll. Whatever you decide be ready to play a game!
1. 28 Days later – Walking out of Hospital and finding that London is empty, well apart from the masses of flesh eating zombies that can run quicker than you could ever imagine!
