The witch has one of the richest histories of any fictional character. Like many creatures from folklore, the line between fiction and reality has frequently been blurred and many innocents have been put to death for dealing in ‘witchcraft.’
The potency and pervasiveness of these accusations and resulting deaths has resulted in many contemporary scholars giving social-anthropological explanations of why some people in the community accused others of dealing in dark magic. Sir Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard, in his 1937 book, suggested that the accusations were a means of regulating conflict, whereby misfortune was attributed to a person who had ‘supernatural powers’ to avoid personal feelings of guilt and to find meaning in calamity, a universal human need.
Away from history, witches have appeared in literature in many incarnations. Many times they are malevolent, such as Miss Eva Ernst in Roald Dahl’s The Witches or Bellatrix Lestrange in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter. In other tomes they are simply innocents trying to cope with both living a teenage life and having magical powers, such as Sabrina in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
