The celebration of Christmas is one of the oldest traditions in Britain. When it comes to the Christmas season, we are told two very different stories, stories that have been handed down from generation to generation. These are the stories of Jesus Christ and Father Christmas. The story of Jesus is the main reason we celebrate Christmas and the story of Santa is based on St Nicholas, a man who cared for those in need, in God’s name.

The traditional story takes us on an adventure of three wise men (the three kings) who follow the star of Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, God’s son. It all began when God choose Mary to carry his child, a child who will later on in life help and guide people on Earth to salvation. The Virgin Mary and her husband Joseph travelled far and wide to find an Inn that would provide them and the unborn child shelter. At every gate they were shunned and told the Inn was full. When they were about to give up, an old inn keeper told them that his barn could provide them with the shelter they sought. This is, of course, where Jesus was born and once word travelled that the son of God was born, kings from across the country came to pay homage and offer the child gifts of gold, frankincense and mirrh.

The next story is a modern tale of a man dressed in a red suit. It is a very popular story, especially with children. Santa is based on the character St Nick, who did his good deeds in secret. St Nick cared for those in need, through Gods name, but as he wanted people to praise and thank god for their blessings he did his good deeds in secret. Every year Santa travels around the world giving gifts to those that have been good, and coal to those who have been bad, all in one night! To help him on his journey he has a sleigh guided by his 9 reindeer; Dasher, Dancer, Prancher, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph.

Through these two different stories people come together to celebrate this very special event. Whether you believe in the traditional story or the modern story, there are many ways to celebrate the season.
