Disney Book Day Costumes

Ever since the first Disney princess movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released back in 1937, every little girl has dreamed of being a princess. And with so many to choose from now, there’s a princess to suit every girl's dreams, whether she’s a warrior like Mulan and Merida or a daydreamer like Rapunzel.

With such a huge franchise now, Disney Princesses are bigger than ever. There are new movies always in production and TV shows like Sophia the First being shown on Disney Junior, where princesses often make appearances to help save the day.

Since most Disney stories stem from fairy tales and story books written by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and Brothers Grimm, World Book Day is a perfect excuse to dress as a princess for the day at school.

All you need to do is pick a princess:

Elsa – from the newest Disney Movie Frozen, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Snow Queen”, Elsa is the Queen of Arendelle. Bewitched with magical powers to control snow and ice, Elsa is forced to hide her powers for her sisters safety, until she can learn to control them. She later learns the key to control her powers is love. Her sister’s love melts the icy barrier she has built herself and allows her to finally control the curse. Let it go.

Anna – Also from Frozen, Anna is Elsa’s sister and princess of Arendelle. Blind to her sister’s abilities, Anna inadvertently forces Elsa to reveal her powers during her coronation, forcing Elsa to flee Arendelle. Anna instantly sets off after her sister, refusing to believe her as the monster the whole city has deemed her to be. Do you want to build a snowman?

Belle – From Beauty and the Beast, a story adapted from a tale by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont, Belle lives with her father in a small town in France. Held captive in a castle by the Beast when she trades places with her dad, Belle learns to see past his terrifying exterior and love him for the good within. Tale as old as time.

Jasmine – From the movie Aladdin, based on the old Middle Eastern Folk Tales ‘Arabian Nights’, Jasmine is the Sultans’ daughter. Forced into choosing a husband, Jasmine leave the castle grounds for the first time in her life in an attempt to escape. While out in the city, Jasmine meets street-rat Aladdin and finds true love.  A whole new world.

Cinderella – from the self-titled movie based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault known as The Little Glass Slipper, Cinderella is an orphan forced to live with her step mother and sisters. With a little help from her fairy god mother, Cinderella goes to a ball at the palace where she meets the prince, but has to leave before he can learn her name. After the prince sets out to search for her, Cinderella and the prince are re-united and live happily ever after. A dream is a wish your heart makes.

Aurora – From Sleeping Beauty, based on the Brothers Grimm tale ‘Little Briar Rose’, Aurora is a princess sent away from her kingdom by her parents in order to protect her from a curse placed on her by Maleficent.  While out in the forest, the princess meets Prince Philip and falls in love. Soon after, despite being sent away, Aurora is caught by the curse and pulled into a 100 year sleep.  Prince Philip races back to the kingdom, battling Maleficent to get to Aurora, waking the princess with true loves first kiss. Once upon a dream.

Tiana – From The Princess and the Frog, loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale ‘The Frog Prince’, Tiana is a waitress, dreaming of one day opening her own restaurant. After meeting a prince who has been turned into a frog by a witch-doctor and being persuaded to kiss him, Tiana herself is transformed into a frog. The two, with help from some friends, try to figure out together how to become human again. Resigned to the fact that they will be that way forever, the two frogs fall in love and marry, making Tiana a princess. Finally, the kiss from princess Tiana returns them each to their human forms, allowing her to finally open her own restaurant.  Dreams do come true.

Mulan – From the movie Mulan, based around the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Mulan takes her father’s place at war after his is conscribed into battle.  Disguising herself as a man she earns respect among the soldiers. She fights alongside them, saving lives before being discovered to be a woman. Shamed, she is sent home. However, on her way she witnesses the Huns survival and sets out to foil their plan to kill the Emperor of China. Convincing her friends from the army of what she had witnessed, Mulan and her friends save the Emperor, defeat the Huns, earn honour for her family and earn Mulan the love of her captain. When will my reflection show, who I am inside?
