Comic Con is a convention where fans of comics, movies and science fiction can come together and celebrate, meeting like minded people, and even getting a chance to meet their favourite stars and idols. It all started in San Diego, California in 1970 as a one day event which was so successful that it led to a three day event in the same year. The convention includes workshops where people can learn how their favourite art form is created, from drawing animations, to directing, acting or programming games with classes given by the people who are lucky enough to do these jobs as their career. Many famous special guests make appearances and give interviews revealing exclusive information and drawing massive crowds. There are screenings of new films so fans can be first to see the newest releases. There is even a masquerade costume competition where prizes are given out for the best fancy dress costume. This sees hundreds of people turning up dressed as their favourite comic book or film character from superheroes and villains like Catwoman and Bane to the X-Men, Star Wars characters and scary Zombies. People make a real effort with their Comic Con outfit and the wackier the better.  

Comic Con now takes place all over the world with conventions held in India, the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom, and Canada as well as the United States. In the UK ours take place in London on the 22nd -24th of May 2015, Birmingham on the 21st - 22nd of March, the Midlands on the 14th of February, Ireland on the 2nd - 3rd of May, Manchester on the 25th - 26th of July, Scotland on the 26th - 27th of September and the Republic of Ireland on the 29th - 30th of August. So make sure you’ve got your comic con costumes all ready to be in with a change of winning the best dressed prize!
