Sport Relief 2014 is taking place from Friday 21st March to Sunday 23rd March and it promises to be another spectacular year for the charity event. People all over the country will be taking part in activities to raise money for people in need not just in the UK but abroad as well. The money raised is split between many worthy causes including helping the homeless, the elderly and providing life saving vaccines. This year Sainsbury’s are organising The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games which has been backed by Olympians Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford, Rebecca Adlington, Ellie Simmonds, Victoria Pendleton and Liam Phillips. People can sign up to take part in a run, a swimathon or cycling event all with varying distances in different locations around the country. There are many ways that people can fundraise, some fun ideas include setting up a swear box and making people put a pound in each time they swear, doing a sponsored silence, getting a wax, or ditching the formal clothes and wearing either sports kits or fancy dress to work for the day! You could dress up as a sporting hero such as Frankie Dettori or Evel Knievel, or you could wear something wacky like a clown costume with red being the main colour theme to go for. Each year a celebrity takes on a huge sporting challenge in order to inspire people to donate. In past years it has been John Bishop, David Walliams and Eddie Izzard. This year it is the turn of Davina McCall in an event which is being called Beyond Breaking Point. She will run, cycle and swim from Edinburgh to London over a 7 day period. The challenging swim consists of crossing the freezing Lake Windermere. The entire journey is over 500 miles long and it promises to be extremely demanding. If you want to sponsor Davina you can do so here. The charity single this year is a cover of the 1986 hit Word Up originally by Cameo and re-mastered by Little Mix. Simon Cowell has stated that 100% of the profits for the single will be donated to the charity. Sport Relief takes place every two years and the total amount raised in 2012 was an amazing £50447.197. We all hope to surpass that this year!
