Red Nose Day Costumes

Comic Relief 2015 takes place on Friday the 13th of March. An unlucky day for some but it won’t be unlucky for the charities this event raises money for if last year is anything to go by, when a whopping £100,331,808 was raised for people in need across the world. The idea for this fundraising event first came about after the success of Live Aid, a concert in which many artists performed and the public generously donated money to change lives both in Africa and the UK. The first Comic Relief was in 1985 with Red Nose Day following in 1988, championed by Lenny Henry. A great night of TV entertainment was aired on the BBC with a mix of comedy and documentaries showing what the money was being raised for. Each year this event has become bigger and bigger with celebrities taking part either presenting the show, making special episodes of TV shows and soaps, performing and releasing charity pop songs, or taking on gruelling challenges in the name of raising as much money as possible. Different events are often set up to encourage the public to take part and raise money in their local towns and villages. Popular events include bake sales (especially with the growing popularity of The Great British Bake Off), sponsored silences, danceathons, bring and buy sales, quiz nights and fancy dress days at school or work. This year the theme is Make Your Face Funny For Money. It could be as simple as wearing a red nose, or you could go all out and have your face painted as a clown. You can apply for a free fundraising kit which gives many ideas for making a funny face, including wearing silly glasses, sticking on a fake moustache, wearing a brightly coloured wig or applying some awful make-up!

Last year the theme was “Do Something Funny For Money” and we saw a huge rise in the sale of Clown costumes. With both children and adults dressing up and giving their best circus performance! Red outfits and accessories are also popular with people matching their outfit with their red nose. So get your costume ready, paint your face, take a selfie, donate and get involved to make this year the best Comic Relief yet!
