Zombie Costumes

Zombie fancy dress has always been popular at Halloween – and why not? All Hallows Eve represents the time when the veil between the living and the dead is at its weakest, and zombies – being members of the undead – are therefore most likely to walk the Earth on October 31st.

Zombie Fancy Dress

The Zombie genre has risen in popularity hugely in recent times. One of the films credited with helping to create its resurgence is 28 Days Later which was released in 2002 with a sequel following in 2007. Its plot of a man waking from a coma to find a world hit by a zombie apocalypse mirrors that of the recent AMC TV series The Walking Dead which hit our screens in 2010 and is now on its 5th series. The show is based on a comic book series which was first issued in 2003. One of the first films to bring zombies to the big screen was the cult classic The Evil Dead which was a low budget American horror film released in 1981 that terrified audiences. It was re-made in 2013 more than likely as a way to make some money from the zombie mania that was sweeping the country! Another zombie movie which will no doubt pop into most people’s minds is Shaun of the Dead starring Simon Pegg in a more comedic approach to the genre. One of the most recent examples of the undead in the media is the White Walkers in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. These human-like creatures have a mummified appearance and glowing blue eyes. They kill any human they come across turning their eyes blue and reanimating them as the living dead who can only be killed by fire.

The origin of zombies comes from folklore in the Caribbean country Haiti. It was believed that a corpse could be reanimated and controlled by a witch doctor or sorcerer. These beliefs were rife in enslaved Africans in the area who believed that they would spend their afterlife as a zombie if they misbehaved in this life.

The fancy dress industry has seen a huge rise in demand for zombie costumes especially during Halloween with both men and women wanting to dress up as these soulless entities. We have seen that any character can be zombiefied with some creative make-up, fake blood and white contact lenses, from the normally loveable Minnie Mouse to a fairytale favourite like Snow White! Our range includes a nurse and doctor duo that you definitely would not want looking after you in hospital,  a policeman and policewoman who need locking up themselves, and even an un-dead Batman and Robin who will be committing crime rather than fighting it! A new addition this year is the Zombie Plumber costume which is a grisly take on the Nintendo character Super Mario and is sure to be very popular. You can make your outfit as gruesome as you like, even adding a latex kit to make it look like the skin on your face is peeling off!

So emerge from your grave this Halloween in one of our horrifying Zombie outfits and spread the terror around your fancy dress party!
