Carnival Fancy Dress

Carnival or Carnevale is celebrated throughout Europe. It is a Christian event which takes place before Lent where people give up eating certain foods and treats for six weeks. All luxury food and drink needs to be disposed of before Lent in order to avoid temptation so a big party is held for the whole community to indulge in the treats, and this is the origin of Carnival. Nowadays it has grown into a parade with many people dressing up in fancy dress. The most popular style of costumes are brightly coloured and fun with themes such as clowns, jesters, and masquerade style masks with elaborate feathers and sequins. Large floats are made for the parade and people either dance on them or dance along the streets. Although the Christian Carnival isn’t very popular in the United Kingdom, it is widely celebrated throughout Europe with some of the biggest events being held in Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia where it is called Karneval, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Spain, Norway and Belgium.
