1960s

Groovy baby! It’s time to head back to the decade of free love and rock and roll when hip tunes floated along the airwaves and peace signs were the symbol of choice. Those who remember the 1960s (and there are some who don’t!) will think of a time of change and revolution in politics, sexual liberation and some of the best music they have ever heard! Whether you were listening to John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison from The Beatles, rocking out to the masterful Jimi Hendrix, or jumping around to The Beach Boys; you were sure to be having fun in the 1960’s!

Fashion in the 60s consisted of PVC dresses, miniskirts, go-go boots and pill box hats with hairstyles ranging from short bobs to beehives. Women were inspired by stars like Twiggy who brought a new style of modelling to the swinging 60’s and Cher who shot to fame in 1965 and became a fashion trendsetter with her bell-bottom trousers, long black hair, and bandanas. Men’s fashion was largely influenced by the mods who wore tailored suits with anoraks, or the rockers who wore leather jackets with greased hairstyles. These two groups became rivals of the time. The hippie movement later into the decade introduced flared trousers, paisley prints, tie dye, and recreational drug use around the world.

The sixties also brought us some memorable films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Mary Poppins, Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn, The Sound of Music, and the western classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. One film which encapsulates the sixtys but was actually made more recently is Austin Powers. Everyone loves Mike Myer’s slapstick take on James Bond classics.
